Use the phone that gets your M-Pesa payment messages
The phone whose number is registered on your Till or Paybill, so it receives a message from MPESA for every payment. It must be an Android phone.

Download the app on that phone
Scan the QR code with the phone's camera, or open the link the phone was sent. The download is about 37 MB.

Allow the install
Android asks before installing apps from outside Google Play. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, go back and tap Install.
If Play Protect says the app wasn't scanned or is unknown, tap More details, then Install anyway. ShelfWise isn't on Google Play because Google only lets a few kinds of apps read messages.

Connect it to your business
In ShelfWise, open Settings → Payments → ShelfWise M-Pesa app and tap Get a pairing code. Open the app on the phone and enter the six numbers.

Allow it to read messages
Tap Allow when the app asks. It only sends messages from MPESA, and only to ShelfWise.

Let it work with the screen off
Tap Allow on the battery card in the app, so Android doesn't put it to sleep.
Tecno, Infinix and itel: open Phone Master (or Settings → App management), find ShelfWise M-Pesa and turn on Auto-start and background activity.
Samsung: Settings → Battery → Background usage limits, and make sure ShelfWise M-Pesa isn't in Sleeping or Deep sleeping apps.
Xiaomi, Redmi and Oppo: Settings → Apps → ShelfWise M-Pesa → Battery → No restrictions, and turn on Autostart.

Sell as usual
At the till, choose M-Pesa and complete the sale. The customer pays your Till or Paybill as always, and the sale shows as confirmed when the money arrives. Nobody has to type a code or ask for a phone number.
Questions
Common questions
A payment didn't show up. What do I do?
Open the app and pull down to send recent messages again. Check the phone is on, has data or Wi-Fi, and that the app still has permission to read messages. Payments the app missed while the phone was off are sent when it's back on.
What does the app send to ShelfWise?
Only messages from MPESA, as they are. ShelfWise reads the M-Pesa code, amount, who paid and the account number. Your other messages stay on the phone.
Can someone fake a payment with a message?
Only messages from the MPESA sender count, each M-Pesa code is counted once, and each phone has its own key that you can disconnect in Settings → Payments. For the strongest check, also connect Daraja, so Safaricom tells ShelfWise directly.
I changed phones.
Install the app on the new phone and pair it with a new code. Then disconnect the old phone in Settings → Payments.
Does it work on an iPhone?
No. iPhones don't let apps read messages. Use an Android phone, or connect Daraja instead.
How does the app get updates?
It checks shelfwise.co.ke for a new version. When one is ready, a bar appears at the bottom of the app: tap Update, then Update again when Android asks. The first time, Android asks you to allow installs from the app once.
Android says "App not installed".
A copy installed before 23 October 2026 can't be updated. Uninstall it (press and hold the app, then Uninstall), install it again from this page and pair it with a new code. Later updates install normally.
